Richard Lewis, the highly experienced hotel and hospitality pioneer, has been appointed CEO of Northern Powerhouse Developments Hotels.
Lewis, who was formerly CEO of Best Western Hotels GB and CEO of Landmark Hotels in Dubai, brings nearly 40 years industry experience to the role and his arrival is a major coup for the ambitious Yorkshire-based hotel and leisure company.
Having spent a lifetime heading some of the world’s most successful hotel groups, Lewis has been brought in to help expand the NPD portfolio and increase profitability across all their hotels.
Talking about his appointment, Richard said: “I am thrilled to have joined Northern Powerhouse Developments and my intention is to help develop what is already an incredibly exciting and ambitious business model.
“In the space of 12 months, NPD have built up an impressive portfolio of hotels across Wales with a unique approach and our plan is to now replicate this model across the rest of the UK and Europe.”
With a strong marketing background and an in-depth knowledge of industry-changing technology, Lewis is regarded as one of the best in the business and NPD Chairman Gavin Woodhouse believes he is the man who can now take them to the next level.
Speaking about his appointment, Woodhouse said: “The arrival of Richard as our new CEO is hugely exciting and reflects just how far we have come in the past 12 months
“His track record and experience within the hotel and hospitality industry speaks for itself and there is nobody better equipped to deliver and oversee the successful operation of a portfolio of hotels than him.”
With four decades of experience in service industries and 16 years in international markets, Lewis boasts an impressive CV which includes senior roles with Savoy Hotel Group, EMI, Forte, Le Meridien, CNN Turner Broadcasting and Preferred Hotel Group.
In 2011, he was appointed CEO OF Best Western Hotels GB where he helped restructure the group before taking over the reins at Landmark Hotels in 2016 to oversee their nine prestigious hotels in UAE and Saudi Arabia.
With an in-depth understanding of e-commerce, Lewis has helped to pioneer the transformation of travel booking patterns with WorldRes in the late 1990’s before going on to launch Clickworker’s crowdsourcing platform in the UK in 2010 and helping in the development of what3words – a revolutionary addressing system.
Lewis is also an international speaker and panellist who has presented on subjects ranging from ‘Brand though the eyes of the consumer’ to ‘Internet innovations in Tourism’.
With six operational hotels in Wales and plans to launch Afan Valley Adventure Resort – a multi-million pound outdoor activity park in South Wales – NPD are rapidly establishing a name for themselves in the UK hotel and leisure market.
The arrival of Lewis as CEO, comes just months after NPD announced the high-profile appointment of Peter Moore OBE, as the company’s Chairman of Leisure and completes a formidable team to deliver NPD’s expanding portfolio of hotels, leisure resorts and spas.
Woodhouse added: “Richard’s appointment alongside Peter Moore means we now have the best possible team in place to deliver a hotel and resort experience of the highest quality.
“Their combined experience and knowledge will make us a major force within the industry over the next five years and the group couldn’t be in better hands.”
